Someone once asked Bill Shankly if he thought football was a matter of life or death, to which he replied, “Listen, it’s more important than that.” For generations of supporters, Liverpool has been more than a football club - it has been a way of life shaped by family tradition, collective memory, and an unwavering bond between club and city. A lifelong Liverpool supporter himself, photographer Horst A. Friedrichs has spent years documenting that world from within, turning his lens toward the people and places that give the club its singular identity. His photographs capture supporters streaming toward the stadium on match day, murals celebrating legendary players and managers, clouds of red smoke, scarves held high, the emotion etched across faces in the Kop, and the city streets where allegiance to the Reds is woven into daily life. More than 220 beautifully reproduced photographs, complemented by interviews with lifelong supporters and contributions from Dan Morgan, author of Jürgen Said to Me, create an authentic portrait of a club whose greatest legacy lives not only on the pitch, but in the people who are its lifeblood.
